Reckless Racing Ultimate £3.49

Reckless Racing Ultimate

Author

Reckless Racing is a top down racing game that allows you to race over a large variety of tracks which are off-road, and road based or a mixture of the two.  You can also collect a large amount of vehicles including cars, and trucks.

Upon starting the game you are presented with Career Mode, Arcade, Single Player, Store, and Multiplayer.  The career mode, lets you race in a series of events with your objective to be number 1 overall to unlock the next series.  Racing also earns you money for you to spend upgrading or buying new vehicles.  The upgrade options are quite extensive allowing you to upgrade engine, handling and tyres to give you the edge in the race.

The graphics in-game are very good, and the car physics are very arcade like allowing you to perform massive drifts around the corners and huge jumps over the bumps.  If you’re after a realistic simulation turn away now as this game is for pure arcade fun.  As you progress through the career mode, it is vital to upgrade your car as you face ever tougher opposition otherwise you will be left in their dust literally.

The game is fully Xbox Live enabled, so features leader boards, and achievements for you to battle against your friends.  The multiplayer section of the game allows you to dual against random opponents or your friends, you can also unlock full online races.

Overall Reckless Racing Ultimate is a very fun arcade racing game with good graphics, sound effect, and car physics and I would highly recommend trying the game.

Pinball FX2 Free

Pinball FX2

Author

Pinball FX2 is the next chapter in the Pinball FX series.  While the game is free you can only play on one table, and must purchase additional tables to play on so this review is based on the free table provided.

Upon starting the game it signs into Xbox Live if you have a profile.  As the game is Xbox Live enabled you can also collect Xbox Live achievements, and view leader boards.  Selecting the mars table you get the options of single player, hot seat, leader boards, and achievements.

Single Player is the main mode of the game, while hot seat is for local multiplayer where players take it in turn to get the best score.  Upon starting single player mode, the game zooms over the table, and then you launch the ball to start.  The controls are really simple as it’s just the flippers, launch and nudge.  I found playing on both my PC and Tablet to be the same.

The pinball table is well designed and the graphics are good.  The ball physics are also excellent and the action can be a very fast pace.  The sounds also fit in with the theme of the game.  While only one table is included in the free version, new tables seem to be a little pricey.

Overall the free table still provides plenty of entertainment, and offers a good challenge to try and beat your high score.  The graphics, sounds, and physics are pretty good and the game is well worth downloading even with just one table on offer.  You can of course, if you enjoy the game purchase the extra tables.

Dead Pixel Checker by Dvana Free

Dead Pixel Checker by Dvana

Dead Pixel Checker by Dvana is as the name suggests a tool for checking dead pixels on new hardware such as monitors, laptops, and tablets.  Dead pixels can be hard to spot unless it’s in an obvious place and manufacturers will often exchange hardware if it contains so many dead pixels.

The app is very simple by design and that’s all it needs to be to serve its purpose.  Once you start the test the whole screen goes red for you to check to see if your hardware contains any dead pixels.  A click of the mouse or touch of the screen changes it to the next colour.  The app goes in sequence from red, green, blue, white and black.  Once you have completed the test you can be rest assured that your screen is ok, or needs to be returned for an exchange.

Overall the app is simple and performs the task it was designed to do as simple as it can.

The Gunstringer £0.99

The Gunstringer

Author

The Gunstringer for Windows 8 / RT is a sprint to the finish twist based on the Xbox Kinect game.  Once the game has started you have the options of story mode, endless run, tutorial, store, achievements, and leader board.

On starting the story mode you have to run and make it to the end of the level dodging obstacles by jumping, sliding, and manoeuvring around them.  At a certain level you will face a boss who you must kill to progress to the next levels.  In the levels you also collect coins, and shoot outlaws to earn extra points.

Endless run puts you on a never ending level to see how long you can survive.  This mode also has Xbox live leader-boards so you can challenge friends also.  The store allows you to spend the gold you collect throughout the game to buy new characters, outfits, weapons, and powerups.  You can also purchase diamonds for real money to unlock the items in the store faster if you wish.

Overall The Gunstringer is a fast fun Xbox live enabled game.  The graphics and sounds are good, and the leader-boards make you go back for more to beat your friends score.  I must say though, I prefer playing this game on my RT Tablet, than PC as the controls feel more natural tilting the tablet to move, and swiping the screen to jump or slide.

Data Usage Free

Data Usage

Data Usage is a tool for monitoring network usage mainly if you are using data over a capped broadband connection, or through your mobile phone.  On starting the app you can select your network profile such as Bluetooth network, or a Wi-Fi or wired connection.

The app then displays a graph on right side of the screen and you can select to view it over 7 days, or a pre-defined billing period.  You can turn on or off the 3 selection to show on the graph of: – Total data usage, Data uploaded and Data downloaded.

The app also shows how much data you have remaining, and the overall usage.  To change the apps settings you swipe up from the bottom or right click and from there you can open the settings menu.  In the menu you can select a network profile, and enter your data plan, and also the billing start date.

Overall the app is very simple to use once setup, and can be invaluable if you are running a connection that contains a limited cap.  I have noticed if you are connected to Wi-Fi the app will also pickup data if you are transferring or streaming data from a computer to a tablet and not over the internet for example, but there should be no problem if you are connected to a mobile phone through Bluetooth and it will give an accurate reading of your data usage.  All in all it’s a nice free simple tool that could save you some money.

Youtube RT £1.79

Youtube RT

Author

Youtube RT is a YouTube app for viewing and downloading videos from youtube.com.  Upon opening the app you see a list of trending video’s, recently featured, most shared, most popular and more.  You can select one of these sections and all the videos appear and you can search by swiping to the left or right and selecting a tile for the video you wish to play.

The app also allows you to login to your YouTube account and see your latest subscribed videos and it allows you to rate and comment on them from within the app.  You can also setup a number of features in the charms / settings menu.  This ranges from default playback quality, region settings, live tile setup, full screen mode, and more.

Upon starting a video it will either load up full screen, or minimised depending which settings you have selected, swiping up from the bottom or right click and you get the options to zoom, add to playlist, download, change the video quality, and to view the video details.  The streaming quality is good as it’s obviously direct from YouTube.

The download option is a very good feature in the app.  Once you have selected download it shows the various qualities you can download such as SD, HD720P, and HD1080P.  Once you have chosen the quality, you can choose which folder you want to download to and start the download.  The app then sends a notification once it has finished.

Another nice feature of the app is searching.  Instead of opening the charms menu and search, you can just type from the app and the search charm opens automatically which I hope more apps implement.

Overall this is an excellent app for viewing YouTube, the settings are pretty comprehensive yet easy to use, and you can set it up how you want to.  With the addition of video downloads, and the easy to use search function, I can highly recommend this app.

4 Elements 2 Special Edition £0.99

4 Elements 2 Special Edition

Author

4 Elements 2 Special Edition is a mixture of puzzle games entwined with a story about 4 fairies who have lost their magical powers which you must help return.  The puzzles vary from find the objects, rearranging pictures back to normal, to a bejewelled styled game which is the main part of the game.

The object of the game is to match three or more jewels to break blocks to allow the liquid to reach the final finish area to complete the level.  Stopping you is a timer on each level meaning you lose if it runs out.  To aid you in your quest you get special power ups such as: – spade which removes a block beneath the gem, explosion which creates a blast destroying gems and smashing rocks, and more.

Other sections of the game involve finding hidden objects, rearranging pictures back to normal and more.  The graphics and soundtrack are nice and the gameplay gets quite addictive.  It’s one of those games where you have to keep going for more to make it to the next level.  As the game is Xbox live enabled you get leader board and achievement support as standard.

Overall 4 Elements 2 is a fun addictive puzzle game with nice graphics and sounds.  If you are into this genre of gaming it’s well worth checking out.
